The Japan tour of The Spirit of Pocahontas covered Japan from one end to the other, and all points in between, during the summer and fall of 1999. Unfortunately, it didn't go in a straight line. Instead, for the most part we played on one end of the island, then the other, then back to the first. Travel certainly became a part of life!!
Talk about a culture shock! While I got used to some of the intricacies of Europe, I had no idea what to expect for Japan. Japan is a completely different world from what most of us know. Practically across the street from each other, you can find a super-high-tech electronics store and a 500-year-old castle. In the convenience stores, you find dried seahorse in a baggie instead of skittles. The taxi's have automatic door openers, and trying to open the door yourself can get you in a bit of trouble. Subways are used to their fullest capacity, as people will just keep cramming onto the train car until it is literally not possible to put another body on. But, let me tell you, Japan is an experience not to be passed by if you have the chance!!
Japan also brought possibly the heaviest show schedule almost anyone has ever encountered. In 18 weeks, we covered 15 cities and did 219 shows! That averages out to 12 shows a week, but when you take out travel and load in days, you bump that up to about 14 or 15 shows a week. Our heaviest week brought 17 shows (of a 2-hour show!).
Each city's name is a link to a journal for that city. Each story is linked at the end so you can read through the whole tour without having to come back to the schedule.
Note: All of the stories are copied directly from my old websites.... In several stories, I refer to pictures that don't exist on this website. Until such time I have time to edit each and every story, those references are there.
