I first started my production life at the age of 13 at the theatre of my high school. Although lighting had been an obsession since I was a small child, I didn't really get into it until my years at Memphis University School. Although it was indeed "high school theatre," our shows were usually well above typical school standards of those days. I worked my way up from just helping on stage to designing and installing the lighting for every show (four or more a year).
When I went to college at Auburn University, I continued in theatre by becoming a theatre major, with a concentration in lighting design and production. While positions were supposed to be passed around among many students, I was placed as master electrician for three out of four shows by my sophomore year. During my senior year, I got to design the spring musical, The Threepenny Opera, as my senior project.
Also during my years at Auburn, I worked for the University Program Council. The UPC was responsible for bringing all forms of entertainment to campus, from lectures and movies to pageants and major concerts. At the end of my freshman year, I was elected as the technical director to the UPC, responsible for lighting and sound for all events. This included our own systems for smaller concerts and events and dealing with road managers of the large concert tours. The following year, I also served as production manager, during which I oversaw all elements of production for UPC events.
Following school, I spent just under seven years on tour with both Disney on Ice and Troika Entertainment's Starlight Express. Once I tired of the road, I moved to Atlanta and began working for the stagehand union in town. As well, I hooked up as an Assistant Lighting Designer on several museum exhibits, including exhibits about the Titanic, Princess Diana, King Tut, and even creepy body parts. In the fall of 2005, got to program the lighting for two national tours, and am set to do another one in the fall of 2006.
The selections below link to several pages with more details on my production history. Some will include pictures, in-depth journals, and tour maps.
