In late 2004, my work on Diana led to a position on the upcoming Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs. This exhibit was set to be one of the largest and most popular exhibits ever produced, and seemed to provide a great opportunity.
The first set of drawings came in in late December 2004, and meetings started in January of 2005. The next several months saw the exhibit go through so many revisions, I lost count. I finally started getting lightplots put together in the middle of March. The exhibit still went through numbers of revisions, and thus I was constantly redoing the lighting plots. Finally, on May 9, I went out to LA to start the six-week install.
As mentioned above, the original lighting install for the exhibit took nearly six weeks. That was the time I was on site. Before I even got there, much of the multi had already been run, thus making the total lighting install about eight weeks' worth. Why so long? First of all, the exhibit is huge. Second, it was the first time we had installed this exhibit, so there were a lot of unknowns and on-site fabrications. Third....well, we won't get into how many changes went on AFTER stuff was already installed!
Now that we have done the exhibit a few times, the install and de-install takes a little less time. It now takes about six days for the initial rigging, trussing, cabling, and fixture install with a crew of eight in addition to myself and my assistant. We then go to strike the previous city (we own two full lighting systems for Tut), which takes about five days, followed by a few days off. We then return back on site for an additional two weeks of install, revisions, focus, touchups, etc.
Below, find a little more info about the exhibit, including the cities travelled to in the past and future, system specs of the latest install, and photos as well!
